The Committee on National Statistics has released the 8th Edition of Principles and Practices for a Federal Statistical Agency, which supports the essential role of relevant, credible, trusted, independent, and innovative government statistics. Updated every four years, this report articulates five principles and ten practices to guide an effective statistical agency as part of CNSTAT’s mission to provide an independent review of federal statistical activities. Since the first edition in 1992, these reports have had an enduring impact on federal statistical policy.

This 8th edition contains modest refinements from the previous edition, including updated examples and appendices to reflect the many and varied changes across the national statistical system that have occurred since the passage of the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act of 2018 (“Evidence Act”), the CHIPS and Science Act, and implementing regulations.
